AWA Spring of 2011

Hello Everyone,
Welcome to spring. It has been some time coming even in southern Alberta but it finally feels like paddling season will soon be upon us. And with a great snowpack in the Rockies we should be blessed with great paddling this year. I hope that all of you will be able to get out and enjoy a full and active summer this year. The Alberta Whitewater Association and the Alberta Slalom CanoeKayak Association and our clubs have a lot of exciting things planned for this year. Check out the website – www.albertawhitewater.ca and the events calendar for details, but here are some of the highlights
All of your favourite river festivals are back again in Alberta this year, Pincher Creek, Grande Cache, Sundre, Kananaskis and Brierlies

Alberta’s slalom team will have tours to Australia for a winter camp, Chilliwack BC for an spring camp, Jonquiere Quebec for National Team Trials, Wasau Wisconsin for Junior PreWorlds, Golden Colorado for Junior Olympics, and back to Chilliwack for Nationals before winding up at the Kan for Provincials September 2-5

Alberta is well represented on Canada’s National Whitewater Slalom Team and our athletes are travelling to Mexico, Australia, Europe, USA and Canada. They already have some top international finishes and are poised for success in London, 2012. Keep your eyes posted for Jessica Groeneveld K-1W, Ben Hayward K-1, Paul Manning-Hunter K-1, Daniel and Thomas Purcell C-2.

Canoe Polo has a full schedule of tournaments and activities this year and their season is well underway already

Freestyle is being reborn with a new format including some extreme creek races planned for this summer

Instructor and Leader certification courses are being offered around the province again this year under the new NCCP format

AWA, ASCK and the clubs will be hiring 12 fulltime instructors/coaches this summer to run our programs and train youth this year. Get your resume in if you or someone you know is interested.
